Saving Thick-billed Longspurs: Thick-billed longspurs are inhabitants of grasslands, preferring native grassland with a lot of bare ground, rocks, and sparse vegetation.
This species has declined about 95% overall since the late 1960’s. We don’t know much about the reasons behind the decline, other than loss of grasslands to other land uses like development and cropland.
The USFWS has been partnering with National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Montana State University to conduct research on Thick-billed Longspurs to better understand habitat use, nesting success, and identify potential causes of decline.
